Poetry Group

Do you love poetry? Then this is the group for you. Come and meet up with others who love to share favourite poems, discuss themes around poetry and make new discoveries. Do give us a try – you will be most welcome!

Our meetings are quite informal. Each person chooses a few poems and makes copies of them for everyone. Then people read out (or recite from memory) the poems and we go round the group to say how we feel about each poem. This often leads to general discussion. We don't always have a theme, but currently we have the theme of Hope. In the last few months we've had poems by Shakespeare, Keats, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Matthew Arnold, T.S. Eliot, George Herbert, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Hardy, Ted Hughes, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, e.e. cummings, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, John Masefield, Rachel Field, Alfred Noyes, Edward Shanks, W.B. Rands, A.A. Milne and Wendy Cope. (I've probably left out a few!)

Everyone contributes, but we'd also welcome anyone who hasn't read much poetry and wants to learn. No one is obliged to bring poems, and often someone else's choice inspires us to read more.
